In a few words

Kythnos is a quiet and beautiful island in the Cycladic group of of Greek islands in the west of the Aegean Sea. It is only two hours by ferry from the port of Lavrio, which is near to the Athens International airport.
Despite its proximity to Athens, Kythnos retains its authentic traditions as well as boasting many sandy beaches. It remains off the main tourist routes.

Little-known and undeveloped for mass tourism, Kythnos offers instead numerous places to discover, including:

  • an important ancient city excavation
  • the ruins of a Byzantine castle on a spectacular headland
  • a hot springs spa
  • culture such as traditional music and dance

In addition, Kythnos has one of the largest caves in Greece. During your stay you can enjoy the local cuisine, such as cheese, fish, and taste the local wine.

Programm

Day 1 [Monday]: Flight Brussels/Athens
The flight arrives around 1300 and there is sufficient time to visit Cap Sounio and the ancient temple of Poseidon overlooking the island sea routes. Then a transfer to the port of Lavrio to take the two-hour ferry to Kythnos. The Hotel Messaria is situated in the island capital Hora. At dinner in a Hora taverna you meet your guide Katerina.

Day 2 [Tuesday]: Hora-Loutra-Kastro Orias-Loutra-Hora
14 km (5h of walking; height difference +/- 300 metres)
Your first walk heads out of Hora to the coastal village of Loutra before turning uphill to the ruins of a Byzantine castle - Kastro Orias - on a spectacular headland. The return is via a different path to Loutra where we visit the hot springs and the beach for a picnic. The evening meal is in the Hora.

Day 3 [Wednesday]: Hora-Vryokastro-Apokrousi-Hora
11 km (4.5h of walking; height difference 200 metres)
Walk across farmlands to reach the hills where the ancient city is located. The excavations of the Vryokastro site have revealed temples, a bathhouse and the remains of a port. After a picnic on the nearby Apokrousi beach we return via a lush valley.
Evening meal in the port town Merichas.

Day 4 [Thursday]: Hora-Aghios Ioannis-Aghios Stephanos-Hora
12 km (5h of walking; height difference +/- 250 metres)
The walk first passes Panaghia tou Nikous, an old monastery just outside Hora. Then the route crosses farmland with sheep and goats, plus valleys decked in flowers such as oleander in the summer. On the remote Aghios Ioannis beach you can swim and eat a picnic. Then walk around the coast to Aghios Stephanos for the route back to Hora, which has a fairly sharp ascent at first.

Day 5 [Friday]: Kanala-Lefkes-Dryopida
12.5 km (5h walking; +/- 250 metres)
A minibus transfer to Kanala, the island's most important religious site, for a hike along the east coast. Across the sea there are views to neighbouring islands such as Serifos and Sifnos. The path reaches Panaghia Stou Mathia, where there is an old washhouse, before going down to Lefkes beach for a picnic. After, we walk to the village of Dryopida and the Katafiki cave. Evening meal in Dryopida.

Day 6 [Saturday]: Aghios Konstantinos-Flambouria -Merichas
6 km (2.5h walking; +/- 300 metres)
Departure from the hotel in minibus to Aghios Konstantinos church. The path goes down to Flambouria beach where there is a church on a small headland, which is used regularly for weddings. Walk up a short hill before walking around to the port of Merichas. There is time for souvenir buying before the ferry departs in the afternoon.
Overnight at Lavrio in the Saron hotel which has a swimming pool and a restaurant.
