Jura is a superb getaway destination for a week – let the rich heritage and mysteries of Jura whisk you away from the daily grind. You’ll be amazed by the endless list of fascinating attractions awaiting your visit and the rich variety of breathtaking landscapes. These 150 km of paths will enable you to discover the natural wealth of this area and its unexpected treasures: majestic forests, Grande Saline (Great Saltworks) and Saline Royale (Royal Saltworks) both included on the UNESCO World Heritage list, the steephead valleys that typify Jura, surprising vineyards with six AOC wines and quaint villages... Oh, and then there’s the gastronomy… Don’t wait any longer!
Day 1: Arrival in the UNESCO town of Arc-et-Senans, capital of historic Comté.
Check in and night spent in a 3 stars BNB– Park your car
Day 2: Stage: Arc et Senans - Salins les Bains After breakfast, set off for the day. Follow the meandering River Loue and go through the villages of PORT LESNEY, RENNES-SUR-LOUE and LA CHAPELLE SUR FURIEUSE before reaching the Greenway that cuts through the vineyards. You’ll arrive at the town of SALINS LES BAINS, home to the second site where “White Gold” was extracted, the Grande Saline (Great Saltworks), also a UNESCO World Heritage. Why not visit its amazing underground tunnels featuring Romanesque art, and go into the Salt Museum which is a great way follow-up to the guided visit of the saltworks? Or treat yourself to a superb experience for both body and mind by relaxing in the thermal baths with their natural salt water. Distance: 22.5km /Duration: approximately 6 hours /Cumulative ascent and descent: 483 m Check in at your accommodation. Dinner and night’s accommodation in a 3 stars hotel.
Day 3: Stage: Salins les Bains – Arbois
After breakfast, set off for the day. Set off from SALINS LES BAINS to climb up to Fort St André. Afterwards, you’ll go through the village of PRETIN on your way back down before arriving at the village of MONTIGNY LES ARSURES with its
splendid 18th century church and 15th century Château. Carry on down through the vineyards until you come to the town of ARBOIS, and you’ll come to the REVERMONT area. Walk from street to street and discover its monuments and stone houses situated alongside the River Cuisance. After several hours spent strolling through the town you’ll be glad to have a break and something to eat and drink in one of the many cafés!! If you have enough time you could visit the Maison Pasteur, residence and laboratory of the world-famous researcher or the Musée de la Vigne et du Vin (Wine Museum) where you can learn about the history of wine in this small part of Jura. Distance: 19.5km / Duration: approximately 6½ hours/ Cumulative ascent and descent: 890 m Check in at your accommodation. Dinner in a nearby restaurant and night in a 3 stars hotel.
Day 4: Stage: Arbois – Pupillin
After breakfast, set off for the day. Leave ARBOIS to climb up to the superb steephead valley. Walk through the vineyards and the winemaking villages, magnificent views of the surrounding countryside from the Roche du Feu viewpoint. Enjoy the cool temperatures on the way down to the steephead valley until the Fer à Cheval viewpoint. You come to Pupillin, the capital of Le Poulsard, a character-filled wine-making village where you can take advantage of your time here to taste the Vins du Jura! Distance: 21km / Duration: approximately 6½ hours / Cumulative ascent and descent: 891 m Check in at your accommodation. Dinner and night’s accommodation. 3 stars BNB (possible option of transerfs if fully-booked).
Day 5: Stage: Pupillin – Passenans
After breakfast, set off for the day. Leave PUPILLIN to head for Poligny, capital of Comté, nestling at the foot of the plateau. The town is home to the école nationale d'industrie laitière et de biotechnologies (national dairy industry and biotechnologies school), La Maison du Comté and the ruins of Château de Grimont. Afterwards, you’ll head for Passenans. Distance: 20.5km/Duration: approximately 6 hours and 35 minutes/Cumulative ascent and descent: 840 m Check in at your accommodation. Dinner and night’s accommodation. 3 stars hotel.
Day 6: Stage: Passenans – Crançot
After breakfast, set off for a long day’s walk. This route features a range of different heights as you will be going through two steephead valleys. But you’ll never forget their majestic beauty! Leave PASSENANS and head for FRONTENAY, then CHATEAU-CHALON, a wine-growing hilltop village awarded the status of both "Petite citée comtoise de caractère" (Small character-filled Comté historic town) and "Plus beau village de France" (Prettiest village in France). Make your way down to Baumes-les-Messieurs which has received the same accolades as CHATEAU-CHALON. It’s home to a Cluniac Abbey.
Distance: 24km / Duration: approximately 7 hours and 45 minutes / Cumulative ascent and descent: 990 m Check in at your accommodation. Dinner and night’s accommodation.
Day 7: Stage: Crançot - Lons le Saunier
After breakfast, set off for LONS-LE-SAUNIER, capital of Jura. If you have enough time, why not relax in the thermal baths or visit the La Maison de La Vache qui rit (museum on the site where The Laughing Cow cheese is made)!? Distance: 11km / Duration: approximately 3 hours / Cumulative ascent and descent: 134 m Return by train to where your break started to pick up your car. Supplement night is possible in a 3 stars hotel.
