Via Algarviana is classified as a Great Route (GR13). It starts in Alcoutim, by the Guadiana River and ends at the Cape St. Vicente, in Sagres, going through the mountains of “Serra do Caldeirão” and “Serra de Monchique”. It develops, mostly, on forest ground, with interesting natural values passing by several small rural villages.
The route definition was based on some criteria that help to explain the current configuration. Public roads were avoided; the trail should go along supporting points for lodging and restaurants, usually in villages in order to make the path feasible. There was also the obvious need to select the most interesting landscape trails, with points of interest along the journey, both environmental and cultural.
